Over the years DJDA has raised £3600.00 for the Special Care Baby Unit, initially at Southport Hospital, and then after it transferred to Ormskirk. This charity was chosen as Miss Debbie’s Son was born 9 weeks early weighing just over 2lb, a bag of sugar!
More recently the Dance Academy have supported additional causes; The Medical Day Unit (MDU) at Southport hospital. This Charity was chosen as Mr Richard Chapman, a Wonderful Dad of 4 pupils from DJDA sadly lost his battle with Cancer at an early age in June 2012.
To date DJDA has raised £1500 through three shows and raffles. This has enabled the unit to purchase two chemotherapy chairs and also some comfortable chairs for the patients to rest in whilst in the private side rooms receiving specialised treatment.
The newly refurbished Medical day Unit has significantly expanded in size internally as well as having a semi-circular lounge extension added. It has created a light, airy treatment space for patients, some of whom require up to eight hours of chemotherapy at a time. There are also new consulting rooms and a more comfortable waiting area for patients. Investment in the unit means more patients can be treated locally rather than them facing long journeys to specialist centres elsewhere. Pupils from DJDA will continue with various fundraising events to raise more funds for this very special unit.
Our new charity is Alder Hey Children’s hospital that is based in Liverpool. We held a summer show in July 2019 and through a raffle we raised £507.00. We have also raised money through “Guess the name” of our dance bear (£25.00). In addition to that we held a number raffle for the NHS Staff at Southport hospital during lock down and raised (£75.00).
